Bilbao
Final project - 2013
It is brought up as the acting zone for the project the headquarters of the Bank BBVA roof and its adjoining building, at first. These facilities make up the iconic Tower located in the Bilbao Gran Via, opposite the former Banco Bilbao, located on the same artery of the capital vizcaína and attached to the building of El Corte Inglés. The solar is situated, as you can see, near the river and very close to the train station, and therefore enjoys what is understood as a privileged location in the city.
What regards the evolution of this iconic tower over the past years, we can say that there have been many internal changes of opinion about its use.
Despite many comings and goings, today the great tower of the BBVA remains active and therefore one of the main intentions of this project is that, through the construction of this new headquarters enacts a new fresh and renewed image of the Bank which, on the other hand, has been very deteriorated due to the known bad press that this type of entities have been gaining during these years of economic crisis.
The project aims to the creation of a place for the meeting of the citizen through the annexation of a headquarters to the BBVA building. It proposes the development of a generic plan that could give a valid service to any of the fields or areas of activity that the Foundation realizes, whose strongest branch is the scientific research. It starts from the idea of formation of a new piece acting with minimal variations on the already existing.
Hence arises a new piece that is perpendicular but without touching it, showing it the respect that it deserves, but providing itself as well of a new sculptural character. The new tower stands with some transparent intention over the previous and joins the lower volume taking advantage of it for the new program.
Parts of the program's needing for more direct access to the public and with larger surface area shall be provided on it. The hall, along with the new BBVA museum and shop and bookstore is located on the ground floor. In the first and second floor and with views to the hall and the square, the cafe. Upper floors the auditorium, and also a restaurant and a nursery. The Tower comes together with those parts of the program that give a more direct service to the program raised by the Foundation, such as the exhibition halls, multipurpose and audiovisual rooms, library, media library, a plant which could accommodate small apartments for scientists and even a small bar. Double height of connection between them, creating an inner game occur in certain plants, due to the emergence of a broader part of the program. In the case of the Auditorium, the double-height maintains a lineup that is intended to resemble that of the old lower volume.
With its simple Prism shape, the Foundation building aims to represent through its sculptural character a transparent and lightning SCAFFOLDING that has been attached to the tower and remains timeless for the use of the citizen.
